The place God has called us to, Original Aurora, has one of the highest rates of poverty in the Denver area. In our neighborhood, there are scores of people struggling to put food on the table, that battle month to month to keep any kind of housing. Many cry themselves to sleep at night realizing the hopelessness of their lives and the cycle of poverty that is strangling their kids. What an incredibly awesome privilege to be called by God to proclaim good news to these people who so desperately need to hear some good news. And even better is that not only is their a God who cares about their day to day material needs, but that our God cares about their eternal and spiritual needs, as well. The good news is that God is preparing mansions, while giving peace, hope and forgiveness right now. Our God is eager to put the broken pieces of these people’s lives together into something amazingly beautiful.
Stressed urban communities like Original Aurora, Colorado have been described as “God forsaken”. Those places may be church forsaken, they may be government forsaken, they may be opportunity forsaken… but they are not God forsaken. Some might come to that conclusion because compared to neighboring communities unemployment is higher, graduation rates are lower, crime is higher, poverty is more pronounced. But those facts don’t prove God’s disinterest in the community but rather show God’s careful and focused attention. Remember that the Bible says “But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless (Psalm 10:14).
What an honor it is to have the call and opportunity to partner with God in a place that has His careful attention. It may be a place that has been forsaken by some – but do not say it’s God forsaken, it simply is not true.
